hosted by Dr. Valerie Rawlston Wilson, economist at the National Urban League, to discuss the newly released October 2010 employment statistics and what they signal for the future of this recovery and for urban communities.

Highlights of the October 2010 Employment Report:

The economy gained a net 151,000 jobs in October, reflecting gains in a number of service-providing industries.  Private employment increased by 159,000.  The number of unemployed people in October stands at 14.8 million.

Despite the job growth, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.6% in October as labor force participation edged down to 64.5% (from 64.7%). Most major worker groups saw little change in their rates of unemployment, with black males experiencing the most improvement, though still having the highest unemployment rate -- black unemployment rate was down to 15.7% (from 16.1%) and the participation rate was up to 62.2% (from 61.7%); unemployment rate for black men was down to 16.3% (from 17.6%); for black women 12.7% (from 12.6%); whites 8.8% (from 8.7%); and Latinos 12.6% (from 12.4%). Rates of teen unemployment were 23.6% for whites (from 23.4%), 48% for African-Americans (from 49%) and 31.6% for Latinos (from 31%). The rate of underemployment (including the unemployed, marginally attached and those working part-time for economic reasons) was 17% (from 17.1%).

The ranks of long-term unemployed (jobless for 27 weeks or more) showed little change from September – now at 6.2 million or 41.8% of all unemployed.

Professional & business services (+46,000), health care (+34,000), and retail trade (+27,900) displayed the most growth in October as the government (-8,000), manufacturing (-6,000) and leisure and hospitality (-5,000) sectors experienced losses.  The majority of government job losses were in local government, excluding education (-14,200).

The October 2010 Employment report, along with a new report --Will the Jobs Come Back? Impact of Offshoring on Professional & Business Services Jobs and other timely reports on unemployment insurance, how job creation reduces the deficit and NUL’s 6-point Job Creation Plan are available at the State of Urban Jobs website.

Join us Friday, November 5, 2010 from 2-3pm for a live chat hosted by Dr. Valerie Rawlston Wilson, economist at the National Urban League, to discuss the newly released October 2010 employment statistics and what they signal for the future of this recovery and for urban communities.

Despite nine consecutive months of private job growth (averaging 95,889 jobs per month), the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high (9.6% in September) with 14.8 million people unemployed and another 9.5 million people underemployed, or working part time because they were unable to secure full time employment. What will October’s report reveal about the status of the recovery? So far, how does this recovery measure up to economic recovery under Bush?

Good afternoon Empowerment Brigade!

It’s mid-day and the Polls close at 8:00 p.m. tonight.  To quote a great man, “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.”**

Generations were denied their rights through violence and intimidation.  They endured hardship, humiliation and even death so that today, we can make our voices heard.  Millions now deprive themselves of those rights through complacency or apathy.  Don’t be among them.  The clearest message you can send today just by pulling the lever is how seriously you value those sacrifices and your hard earned place in this democracy.

It’s mid-day in this election, mid-day in this country and mid-day in this presidential term.  What you do before 8:00 p.m. matters more than ever.  Vote… and take a neighbor with you!

Update, notify , or Tweet your neighbor!

What You Need to Know About the State of Urban Jobs!

Unacceptably high unemployment continues to plague our communities and hamper the progress of economic growth.  NUL’s
State of Urban Jobs site at iamempowered.com gives you everything you need to know about jobs including the monthly employment report with stats for Blacks, Whites and Latinos, the National Urban League’s response to the current crisis, the facts about how investing in job creation is the best strategy for reducing the deficit, as well as resume writing tips, job listings and information for small business owners. Click here to view and stay abreast of the latest developments from the September 2010 Employment report.

Join us today from 2-3pm for an
online chat hosted by Dr. Valerie Rawlston Wilson, economist at the National Urban League, to discuss the newly released September 2010 employment statistics and what they signal for the future of this recovery and for urban communities.

Highlights of the September 2010 Employment Report:

The economy lost a net 95,000 jobs in September, reflecting losses in government employment (-159,000)– primarily temporary Census jobs and local government.  Private employment increased by a modest 64,000.  The labor market needs to grow by 150,000 – 175,000 jobs each month to avoid further deterioration in the unemployment rate.  The number of unemployed people in September stands at 14.8 million.

The unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.6% in September as labor force participation remained essentially the same. Little to no change was also the story across all major worker groups in the labor force -- black unemployment rate was 16.1% (from 16.3%) and the participation rate was 61.7% (from 62.2%); unemployment rate for black men was 17.6% (from 17.3%); for black women 12.6% (from 13.2%); whites 8.7%; and Latinos 12.4% (from 12.1%). Rates of teen unemployment were 23.4% for whites (from 23.8%), 49% for African-Americans (from 45.4%) and 31% for Latinos (from 33%). The rate of underemployment (including the unemployed, marginally attached and those working part-time for economic reasons) was 17.1% (from 16.7%).

The ranks of long-term unemployed (jobless for 27 weeks or more) showed little change since August – now at 6.1 million or 41.7% of all unemployed. However, many of these workers may be settling for part-time rather than full-time jobs – the increase in the number of people working part-time for economic reasons nearly offsets the decline in the number of long-term unemployed.

Leisure and hospitality (+38,000), health care (+23,900), and professional & business services (+14,000) displayed the most (though still modest) growth in September as the construction (-21,000) and manufacturing (-6,000) sectors experienced losses.  Half of all government job losses were in local government (-76,000) -- particularly local education (-49,800) – while the other half were from the loss of temporary Census jobs.

The September 2010 Employment report, along with other timely reports on
unemployment insurance, how job creation reduces the deficit and NUL’s 6-point Job Creation Plan are available at the State of Urban Jobs website.
